Llanwrtyd Wells
Llanwrtyd Wells is a small town in Powys, Wales, known for being the smallest town in Britain. It has a rich history that dates back centuries, shaped by its role as a spa town, a market centre, and a hub for quirky events.
Development as a Spa Town (18th-19th Century)
Llanwrtyd Wells became famous in the 18th and 19th centuries for its mineral springs. The town’s rise to prominence began in 1732, when The Reverend Theophilus Evans discovered the healing properties of a local spring. The Dolycoed Spring became a popular destination for visitors seeking the medicinal benefits of its waters, believed to treat ailments like rheumatism and digestive problems.
By the 19th century, Llanwrtyd Wells had grown into a thriving spa town, attracting visitors from across Wales and beyond. Hotels, guesthouses, and bathhouses were built to accommodate tourists. The arrival of the Mid Wales Railway in 1867 further boosted the town’s popularity.
20th Century Decline and Reinvention
With the decline of the spa industry in the early 20th century, Llanwrtyd Wells had to find new ways to attract visitors. It remained a small rural town with tourism based on its scenic surroundings, including the Cambrian Mountains.
Modern Llanwrtyd Wells: Quirky Events and Tourism
Today, Llanwrtyd Wells is known for its eccentric festivals and outdoor activities, including:
- Man versus Horse Marathon (founded in 1980) – A unique race where runners compete against riders on horseback.
- World Bog Snorkelling Championship – A bizarre sporting event held in a peat bog.
- Real Ale Wobble & Real Ale Ramble – Beer-themed mountain biking and walking events.
- Alternative Olympic Games – A fun, spoof version of the Olympics.
Despite its small size, Llanwrtyd Wells has carved out a niche as a destination for unusual and exciting events, attracting visitors from all over the world.
